Keep students from Logging in with private Credentials

4/28/2016

For Chromebooks, we can lock them down to only domain (cps.edu) users, but unless you blacklist the add account pages, students can still add their personal accounts and do whatever they want. In the Admin Console you can blacklist URLs. To the best of my knowledge, these are the sites to blacklist (on student devices only, unless you want to upset your Chromebook using teachers):

https://accounts.google.com/AccountChooser
https://accounts.google.com/AddSession
Accounts.google.com/Log9out
Accounts.youtube.com/Logout2
Accounts.google.com/AddSession
https://accounts.google.com/AccountChooser
https://accounts.google.com/AddSession#identifier

Those should prevent the addition of personal accounts moving forward. The issue is that if they have all ready added that personal account, this actually blocks them from signing out of the personal account and will block them from their CPS accounts. At that point, you will have to instruct them to reset Profile Settings (chrome://settings/resetProfileSettings). That resets them back to default (it doesn't lose bookmarks, it just signs them out of everything). It is a pain, but it works.

Sound and Music apps for Chrome OS

4/27/2016

Soundtrap
Soundtrap allows you to make and edit sound and music online.

Audiotool
Audiotool is more like Reason than a traditional desktop sequencer, so if you prefer that style this is a great option. Audiotool contains a host of very high quality samplers, synths and effects that you can combine together to create some great sounding tracks.

Audiosauna
Audiosauna is a fairly traditional sequencer, but it’s more for note triggered soft synths rather than audio loops. There’s a number of soft synths available as well as a mixing rack and effects.

Chromebook Tips

Not just for aficionados, the following tips may even make switching to Chrome OS a little easier for newcomers.

Use The Chrome App Launcher as a Calculator

2

In Chrome you can subtract the hassle of opening an app, launching a website or reaching for your phone or getting out pencil and paper by using the Chrome App Launcher to perform simple sums instead. Not surprisingly, like Google's search pages, basic things can be calculated quickly, and it supports semi-advanced features like brackets, tan, cos and sine.

Use Chrome App Launcher as a Unit Convertor

1

You can perform on-the-fly conversions in the launcher too. Just express your query as“{num} {original unit} in {needed unit}” and the result will appear. Supported/example conversations include grams to kilograms, millilitres to tablespoon, miles to km, meters, cm, mm, inches… and so on.

Use Chrome App Launcher to Open Apps By Voice

chrome-os-voice-hotword

Perhaps not the best for the classroom, Google’s Launcher also has built-in voice search capabilities. Aside from barking random search terms at your device, you can also launch apps installed on your Chromebook by saying their name:

So, for example, saying “Ok, Google – Wunderlist” will launch Wunderlist (assuming it is installed).

Fix the "Chrome OS is missing or damaged" error with the Chromebook Recovery Tool

4/15/2016

If this error appears, your Chromebook's operating system isn't working properly, and you should recover your Chromebook.
Because recovery reinstalls the operating system to get your Chromebook working again, it will also permanently erase all information on your Chromebook's hard drive. If you've saved your documents to Google Drive all of it has been safely backed up for you.
In the steps below, you'll create recovery media and go through the recovery process to fix the error.
What you need to get startedBefore you get started, you'll need:
  • The Chromebook with the "Chrome OS is missing or damaged" error
  • A different computer with the Google Chrome browser installed (Windows, Mac, or another Chromebook)
  • An SD card or USB drive that you don't mind erasing
  • The Chromebook recovery app (details below)
What you need to doTo recover your Chromebook, you'll first create media with the Chromebook recovery app, then reinstall your damaged Chromebook’s operating system.
  1. Install the Chromebook Recovery Utility on the working computer (not the Chromebook with the “Chrome OS is missing or damaged” error).
  2. Open the app and follow the on-screen instructions to create the recovery media.
  3. Insert the SD card or USB drive you’ve created into the Chromebook you want to recover.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Take a Screenshot on a Chromebook

To take a screenshot of the entire screen press the Ctrl key and the Switcher key at the same time:

chromebook screenshot

Just need a bit of the screen? Pressing the following keyboard combo will allow you to select a section of the screen to snap:

chromebook partial screenshot

Open File Manager

Opening the file manager in Chrome OS is easy using a trackpad or mouse (especially if you pin it to the app shelf) but keyboard aficionados aren’t left out: just tap the following pairing.

open-file-manager-shortcut

Launch Apps on the Shelf

Applications pinned to the Shelf (the bar at the bottom of the screen in Chrome OS) can be opened using a keyboard shortcut.

The first app in from the left – count the Chrome icon as 0 – is 1, the next 2, and so on until you reach 8.

Lock the Screen

If you’re going to leave your computer unattended for a short period (say, whilst you go grab a coffee refill) you may wish to lock your screen to prevent anyone else meddling with your session.

To do this just press the following key combo:

lock chrome os screen

Open the Hotdog aka Hamburger aka Chrome Management Menu

Opening the menu in Chrome isn’t exactly hard, but if you’ve hooked your device up to a huge monitor it can be a fair ol’ scroll up. Save some time and open it with the following command:

hotdog

Toggle Caps Lock On/Off

Most Chromebooks don’t come with a dedicated Caps Lock key. So how do you turn it on when you need to express your subtle feelings type in capital letters?

Just hit the following key combo to turn it on, and turn it back off when you’re done.

cap

Logout

In a rush to quit your session? Some finger gymnastics will have you out in a snap.

logout

Show Keyboard Shortcut Overlay

It’s a little bit meta, but the ultimate keyboard shortcut is the one that reveals all keyboard shortcuts!

Snap Windows like a Pro

Chrome OS and Windows 8 Mode: you can snap Chrome windows and applications to the left and right sides of the screen like a ninja using the following keys combinations.

To snap a window/app to left-hand side of the screen:

shunt333

To snap a window/app to right-hand side of the screen:

shunt33

Dock Windows Like a Pro

Chrome OS and Windows 8 Mode: You can also shunt select app windows to the “dock” area in a similar way, this time double-tapping the “[” or “]” key.

To dock window/app to the left-hand side:

shunt

To dock window/app to the right-hand side:

shunt

Append and Go

Typing the name of a website, e.g., ‘eBay,’ in the omnibar and hit the following key combo to automatically add ‘www‘ and ‘.com‘ and head to the site.

  • Ctrl + Enter

1Access ‘Delete’

Chrome keyboards don’t come with a traditional delete key. To delete files or text ‘the wrong way’ without using your mouse just position your mouse at the right point in your document/click the file you wish to ditch and hit:

backspace

Paste Text Without Formatting

Pasting text from a word document, web page into an email often carries over text formatting, e.g., different fonts, text sizes, etc. To paste text without formatting press:

paste

Skip/Select Words in a Document

Don’t wear your back-arrow key out trying to move to a specific part of a document letter by letter. Instead use the following modifier to jump back/forwards by word.

chrome-os-keys

To select/highlight words as you jump tap:

chrome-os-keys

Open Chrome OS Notification Center using the Keyboard

You don’t need to take your hands off the keyboard to check any pending notifications in the Chrome OS Notification Center by pressing this key combo:

notification-centre-shortcut

Hard Reboot

While you may never need to, on the  forcibly reboot  It’s not the ideal way to reboot but can be vital if you’re in a boot loop or sat facing a frozen screen.

Just be aware that any unsaved work, data, etc will be lost when using this method.

quit

Access More Google Drive Options

drive options in chrome os

Stable you don’t have to wait; press Alt then Click the cog icon in the File Manager to choose whether mobile data is used for syncing, and whether Google Docs files show up.

Durability Testing

Gabe Sterritt and I took nothing for granted during the Chromebook RFP and personally pushed the Chromebooks to the limits. And pushing might have been the nicest thing we did. I still meet vendors who are concerned when they hand me a device; I don't understand why; I always return them in a ziplock bag. Ah, well. Belvie Foster assembled this loving tribute to the ... gentle care with which we treat potential hardware.
