Make Web Apps Feel Like Native Apps!

12/18/2017

One of the complaints we often hear is that Chromebooks are "just a browser." The UI of Chrome OS often re-enforces that feeling. Many of the web apps we use in Chrome OS are as powerful as native applications, but maybe don’t feel like “real” programs. Did you know that anything that runs in Chrome CAN run in a stand-alone window which makes the web app feel like a native app?

It is as simple as hitting the More (3-dot) menu > More Tools > Add to Shelf > Open As Window. This simple step will pin the app to your Shelf AND when you click on it, it will open as a separate window without the omnibox and other browser paraphernalia.

To launch your "new" app, just select it from the Shelf, and it will open as a stand-alone window.

With an app in a separate window, everything just feels a little more robust. Sure, it is really just a visual cue, but it looks nice and allows for easy app switching, much like on the other desktop platforms.

Multitasking with windows & tabs on Chromebooks

You can finish tasks faster by reorganizing and moving your windows and tabs.

Switch between windows quickly

Press & hold Alt, then tap Tab until you get to the window you want to open.

See two windows at the same time
On one of the windows you want to see, click and hold Maximize window.
Drag to the left or right arrow
Repeat for a second window.

NOTE: You can also use the shortcut Alt + [ to move left, or Alt + ] to move right.

Open & close windows and tabs
Open a new window: Press Ctrl + n
Open a new tab: Press Ctrl + t
Close window or tab: At the top right, click Close
Reopen a window or tab you just closed: Press Ctrl + Shift + t

Change window size
View full screen: At the top of your keyboard, press Full screen (or F4).
Maximize window: At the top right, click Maximize .
Minimize window: At the top right, click Minimize .

Reorder, move, or pin tabs
You can put related tabs together, or move a tab into or out of a window. Also, if there’s a webpage you always want open, like your email, you can make that tab easy to find by pinning it.

Reorder tabs within the same window: Drag the tab to different position along the top of the browser window.
Move a tab into a new window: Click and drag the tab away from the window. You can make the tab into its own window, or drag it into another window.
Pin a tab in place: Right-click the tab and select Pin tab. A pinned tab will appear on the left side of your browser window, and will be smaller.

Working with external monitors
Google is adding a new keyboard shortcut to Chrome OS, making it easy to move open windows between connected displays. In fact, Google is adding a bunch of keyboard shortcuts to help you get around connected displays quickly:

Search + Alt + Left Arrow: move active window to the left nearest display
Search + Alt + Right Arrow: move active window to the right nearest display
Search + Alt + Up Arrow: move active window to the up nearest display
Search + Alt + Down Arrow: move active window to the down nearest display
